A pterygium is a benign growth (non cancerous) that grows onto the cornea (the clear front window of the eye). It is relatively common in Australia due to our high levels of UV light.

Symptoms

  • Eye irritation
  • Eye redness
  • Blurred vision-from astigmatism or corneal scarring

Treatment

For small pterygia topical lubricating eye drops can temporarily alleviate symptoms. However the only long term solution is surgical removal of the pterygium. We recommend removal of a pterygium if it is affecting or threatening your vision or is causing discomfort.

Pterygium Surgery with No Stitches

Heidelberg Eye Clinic offers sutureless pterygium surgery. Under local anaesthetic (no needles around the eye) the pterygium is removed. A conjunctival autograft is taken from the top surface of the eye and glued to the site of the removed pterygium. A special fibrin glue eliminates the need for stitches. Studies have shown that this technique is superior to the traditional technique which involves the use of many small stitches.

This technique offers the major benefit that it is a much more comfortable procedure with little post-operative discomfort. Also studies show that there is a lower recurrence rate with this technique.
